Pain Scale

A Pain Scale similar to the one shown to the right will be used to help us assess and manage any pain that you may experience. Pain or discomfort is sometimes an inevitable part of surgical and post-operative care.  At Physicians Surgical Hospitals, making sure you are as comfortable as possible is one of our primary goals. Throughout your stay, you will be asked often to rate your level of discomfort on a scale ranging from zero to ten with zero representing no pain and ten representing severe or intolerable pain. We will use your responses to help us provide medication and other measures designed to keep you comfortable.  You can help us manage your pain by being an active participant.

Here's how you can help: Remember, medication and other treatments can almost always relieve pain.  Please do not suffer in silence or "gut it out."  Let us know as soon as you are experiencing pain and allow us to assess and treat it.  Don't be afraid of becoming addicted to your pain medicine.  That is unlikely over the course of your short hospital stay.  Don't worry about being a "complainer."  You have the right to ask for pain relief, and the sooner you speak up, the better.  It is much easier to control pain before it becomes severe.
